Environmental alternatives for small HPPs in Albania.

Milieukontakt Albania in the frame of the call of REC on National Priorities is preparing an Environmental alternatives for small HPPs in Albania. It is an alternative study prepared by environmental civil organizations that examines the process of rapid development of hydropower sector in the country, against the observed and the expected impact on the environment. This study involves work performed by a team of authors, during the period February-September 2015 using a comprehensive methodology consisting of: i) research analysis, ii) direct meetings, ii) focus group discussions iii) questionnaires, iv ) and consultation sessions with civil society organizations.
 
The study aims to bring in a single document the development of alternative elements hydropower sector, which sees not only the need for energy, but positive and negative real impact of this development in the social sectors, economic and environmental.
One chapter in the study will be focused on the future of hydro energy and climate change.
 
The document is addressed to all stakeholders such as public authorities, civil society, private sector and the donor financing / lending sector in the energy in the country.
The direct beneficiaries of this study are the Albanian community, civil society organizations, local decision makers, state institutions, in particular, the private sector and the media. Establishing a single voice of civil society in terms of better management of the watershed is the duty and responsibility to future generations. At the same time, this study - the first of its kind – will serve to researchers and the academic sector in general as a basic document for advanced researches in the field of hydropower impact on the environment.

The project is in the phase of consultation with environment CSOs throughout the country. There are planned 3 consultative meetings and by September will be presented in a national conference. Different actors: government, parliament, IFI, CSOs and businesses will be invited.
