The capacity building and the involvement of citizens pillars of the Milieukontakt activities are meant to help building a sustainable society and specifically to help preventing and solving environmental problems. Solving environmental problems is the third of our pillar activities.Milieukontakt connects the three pillars in the conviction that you cannot do one without the other. Realisation of a sustainable society needs involvement of citizens and capacities of skilled experts.

Although in some of our projects the solution of environmental problems is prior to the other two pillars and has been addressed through:

Community involvement - The development of a good working atmosphere between the community, local authorities and local NGOs is required in order to get more involvement from the local population.
a. We can mention here development of local strategies on specific topics in 10 LGUs. Local NGOs in different regions were facilitated and supported in participatory processes and discussions for developing strategic documents on Waste, Water, Air and Public Participation, which were materialized into practical activities, trying solving existing local problems. Local NGOs initiated and established a dialogue between different stakeholders: local authorities and business communities. The strategic plans were adopted by the community council and started its implementation.

b. Developing Green Agenda processes encouraging and improving communication between local government, business, citizens and NGOs, conducting and implementing sustainable strategies and action plans through participatory approach. The method combine decision-making from bottom-up, engagement of local authorities in implementing adopted plans to improve local quality of life and wide public participation through learning by doing and monitoring good governance practices of LGUs.
