The aim of the project: Mapping mercury levels in the sediments and biota of the Vjosa River and its tributaries, as a result of anthropogenic pollution as well as informing and awareness of the impact of mercury on health and the environment. Based on the importance of mercury level monitoring in Albania, Milieukontakt will make a mercury level map in the Vjosa River Basin. The Vjosa River is considered the last wild river in Europe. Along its course there are wastewater discharges (without treatment) from a number of urban centers, such as Gjirokastër, Përmet, Memaliaj, Tepelën, etc., which are generally known for the high level of pollutants. The Memaliaj area, being a coal mine for years, has contributed to the deposition of various pollutants. Coal is known to contain heavy metals and mercury. The Vjosa River pass throw the cities of Vlora and Fier, exposed to industrial activities (including Hg). The scientific and quality assessment of the water of Vjosa will raise the awareness of politics and other actors to protect and preserve the ecosystem by giving it the highest status of National Park (IUCN category II).
