Project “Preventing Plastic Pollution on Sazan and Kune-Vain Islands” aims to reduce plastic
waste pollution on Sazan and Kune-Vain islands through prevention, monitoring, and active
engagement of local stakeholders.
Specific objectives include:
- Mobilizing local communities to address marine pollution,
- Monitoring beach litter through a citizen science approach,
- Voluntary reduction of single-use plastics by at least 100 businesses in the HoReCa sector and boat tour operators,
- Raising public awareness about the impact of plastic waste.
Expected results include: - Establishment of a Community of Practice (CoP) to lead local actions,
- Execution of 4 beach monitoring sessions and reporting of data to EMODnet,
- Engagement and auditing of 100 businesses for plastic reduction,
- Organization of awareness-raising and clean-up activities on both islands, with at least 500 kg of plastic removed from nature.
The project is implemented by Milieukontakt Albania and the Environmental and Territorial
Management Institute (ETMI), within the BeMed call for projects in Mediterranean Islands, and is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and its partners. The project duration is 24 months.
